Iron

Two sheets of 5 mm-thick iron are separated by another piece of the same material, this one 15 mm. The oxidation process was accelerated by sponging the surface with vinegar and salt. The upper sheet has holes drilled in it to hold the eight candles and the shamash. The essence of the work can be seen in the selection of materials: iron, strong, almost indissoluble; candles, of the simplest form available, by which to remember the miracle. In this case, iron and fire are not the vehicles of destruction, but of celebration. The artist has sought to establish a strict “rhythm” between the solid surfaces and the voids, between the metal sheets and the holes that hold the candles.
