The work represents a set of scales in a state of unstable equilibrium, standing on a pedestal that acts as a pivot point. On one side is the shamash, counterbalanced by the eight lights on the opposite side. When all the lights are kindled the eight lights are heavier than the servant light. At the moment when all the candles are lit, the eight Hanukkah lights weigh more than the “servant”, but as they are consumed the shamash gradually drops lower until it touches the surface the lamp is sitting on at a precise point on the circle traced by the rotating balance.
